Real Projects Inspired by
Real Professions

From bike handlebar grips customized to the student’s own hands, to turning anything into Lego, to recreating Mesopotamian stamp seals. Matter and Form solves STEAM by providing guided, standards-aligned, step-by-step access to the real 3D tools used every day in dozens of modern professions.

Jack-o-Lantern

Grades 6-8

Scan a gourd and turn it into a 3D printed lantern for Halloween! Learn about biology and energy transfer and get creative by making your own holiday decorations.

Phone Holder

Grades 6-12

In this lesson, students will create a customized phone holder from a favorite toy or other object. Students will apply the design process to consider factors affecting performance, such as phone dimensions, placement of speaker, and other individual considerations. Students will consider how sound moves through the holder and surroundings to explore sound transfer. Designing how to modify the specific object to handle the weight and desired to view angle of the phone presents an engaging engineering challenge. An iterative approach to designing and testing can be followed to reach an optimal solution. As an optional extension, students will evaluate the efficacy of other student designs by placing their phone in competing prototypes.

Coin Bank

Grades 6-12

In this lesson, students will make a coin bank out of an object of their choosing. This hollowed out model allows students to not only apply technical skills and the engineering process to develop a working prototype, it allows them to explore the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. Students will watch a demonstration, and then model themselves, the use of potential energy and its effects as kinetic energy.

Key Chain

Grades 6-8

Students will explore the properties of metals and nonmetals, along with critical design elements in order to craft a usable keychain. This lesson infuses science content knowledge, engineering skills, and technology instruction in order to achieve progress towards national standards.
