What is a 3D Scanner?

A 3D scanner takes a physical object,
measures it, and creates a 3D computer file.

(Think of it as the opposite of a 3D printer that prints a physical object from a computer file!)

3D Scanning in the Classroom

Real world (and real fun) projects!

apple

BEGINNER

Scan something you found, or made out of modelling clay, then print it on your 3D printer.

  • Print it on any 3D printer
  • Create AR/VR classroom presentations

INTERMEDIATE

Use 3D modelling (like TinkerCAD) to modify your scans, add them to other pieces, change them in interesting ways.

  • Custom Lego Bricks
  • Jewelry and decorations

PROBLEM-SOLVER

Use your new scanning, designing and printing skills to solve problems in your community.

  • Orthotic insoles
  • Fitted earphone holders
  • Fixing broken things

Which Industries use 3D Scanning?

  • ENGINEERS

    to examine and alter structures

  • INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS

    for new products

  • MEDICINE

    in the making of prosthetics

  • FASHION DESIGNERS

    to create the perfect fit

  • MANUFACTURING

    for quality control

  • FORENSICS

    for facial reconstruction

  • DENTISTS

    for making tooth implants

  • DESIGNERS

    for product photography

  • VIDEO GAME DESIGNERS

  • TV & MOVIE PRODUCTION SPECIALISTS

    for making special effects

Supporting Teacher & Student Success

  • Live teacher training tutorials. Get the training you need to succeed with your scanner.
  • Six professional standards-compliant lesson plan curriculum to get started:
  • BURNING BRIGHT

Use qualitative modeling to communicate the life cycles of low, average and high mass stars.

  • ART OF PLATE TECTONICS

Model the processes that shape continental and ocean floor features and build a scale model of Earth’s plates.

  • LOST IN SPACE

Apply knowledge of volume and surface area to create a testable scale model of a habitation for survival on an alient planet.

  • THE SECRETS IN SKULLS

Use modeling, 3D scanning and printing to communicate the ancestral and derived characters that illustrate the evolutionary history of humans.

  • EXPLORING PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Measure and explain the physical properties of matter.

  • WHAT LIES BENEATH
